What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?

What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?

Inspired by the idea of shopping intentionally + editing your wardrobe to ensure it makes space for outfits that work with your lifestyle + body, we created our Capsule Closet collection. In this blog post, we are diving a little bit into the concept and how you can incorporate it into your life.

The term ‘capsule closet' was first coined by wardrobe consultant and author Susie Faux in the 1970s when she was unable to find well-made clothing that was versatile and stylish in equal parts. However, it only gathered mainstream attention when the designer Donna Karan launched the ‘Seven Easy Pieces’ collection in 1985 - a capsule collection that was one of the firsts of its kind. Business of Fashion defines it as ‘a curation of outfits and accessories that features only the most essential or influential pieces from a collection. A capsule collection is essentially a condensed version of a designer’s vision, often limited edition, which transcends seasons and trends by being functional.’

The last year allowed us plenty of time to think and evaluate many parts of our lives - our wardrobes included. As events got cancelled and most of us were forced indoors, the idea of clothing that went beyond a particular season or occasion and allowed for versatility began to take center stage. More recently, the concepts of sustainable fashion and intentional living have become a crucial part of our lives.

Inspired, we began to think of how we could incorporate all of these elements into our mission at Desi Ever After. We have always been champions of sustainability and slow fashion, but we knew that the world needed clothing that was designed intentionally, made with love and respect for both the maker and wearer and crafted to do good for the environment - now more than ever.  A few months back, we launched our Capsule Closet Collection (with more releases dropping soon!) - a collection of pieces that might be limited in number but allow for more versatility for the wearer.

The best way to build a capsule closet is to take stock of the pieces that you already own and understand what works best for you based on your current lifestyle. Next, look for pieces that you can wear to multiple occasions and in multiple ways. Can the blouse be styled with your lehenga, saree and jeans? Can the skirt be worn to the beach or your best friend’s wedding? For the ideal capsule closet, it is important to understand your lifestyle and look beyond trends - remember, trends are short-lived and any piece that you buy because it is ‘trendy’ might not be wearable in a few months.

It is also important to know how and where the outfit was made. Was it made with high quality materials and by makers who are treated with love and respect? If your outfit was made with a poor quality material, chances are high that it will come apart in a few months and will need to be replaced with another - increasing the scope for more wastage.

With our capsule closet collection, we have ensured that we have a style and color for everyone - whether you prefer pastels or brights, modest or bold, long or short, we have you covered. Fashion is the biggest form of self-expression and we believe clothing has the power to define your identity. With our capsule closet launch, not just do we want to help desi women express themselves, but do so in a way that is good for the environment. With the variety of options that we offer within the collection, we are confident that our Desi Ever After community will be able to find something that they love and wear for years to come. Buy less, wear more and always aim for high-quality.
