Wonder Woman Wednesday- Hamda Awan
How do you express yourself through fashion?
I express myself through fashion by taking different items regardless of the brand and pairing it together to put a twist on my simple style. Ive never been one for name brands, if anything I will shop from a thrift store as easily as I would shop from a chain store. This allows me to still pair my simplicity of being a tomboy at heart with evolving and being chic. Doing this allows me to have the best of both worlds.
How do you describe your style?
My current style is best described as simple street chic. I love being able to wear my converses with jeans to rocking heels with a skirt. It all depends on my mood that day and what I feel amazing in at the moment. I love being able to have that versatile palette and try new things.
I would say I am definitely traditional in style but I love adding a modern twist every now and then to add a flare to my wardrobe. Just like my street style and being able to be versatile, it’s no different for me with desi wear. I want to be able to pull it all off effortlessly while having fun doing so.
How was it like to be raised in America as a Desi girl?
Living my life as an American desi girl growing up was definitely something I had to grow into. Not because I wasn’t proud of my culture, but because I was being taught that I was different and that wasn’t okay. I was born and raised in the south, and what they say is true..predominantly white racists who just looked at you funny for being different. One day I decided to have an outbreak, to be unapologetic about who I am. I realized I can be both desi and an American. I can appreciate both cultures and I can fully embrace my uniqueness because of it. Taking that stand allowed me to embrace exactly what they feared...and that was different. Being different is what I ended up loving the most about myself. I embraced it. I cherished it. And I became proud, that’s what I loved most about being an American desi girl.
